Travel Diary: San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

It’s been just over a week since I have been back from San Miguel de Allende and I feel like I’m still trying to catch up on daily duties in Dallas, but in a good way! I am so glad I got to be part of a friend’s special day in Mexico, as it gave me a reason to explore the charming little town that is San Miguel de Allende. The long weekend flew by but I’m excited to share the little parts of it that I had the privilege to explore.

See

Wandering the streets of town just to find restaurants and bars I had earmarked was a bit of an adventure itself. The colors of San Miguel de Allende (SMA from now on)were beautiful and the streets were lively. The crowd was mixed with locals carrying on their day to day tasks and tourists window shopping. People were drawn towards the town’s plaza where there were plenty of benches and shade for the people watching. If none of that is your speed, there’s much more going on too!

Luna Rooftop at Rosewood: It seemed to me there was a rooftop on every corner. Even my airbnb had private roof access! That being said, not all rooftop views are the same. The Luna view of the city was nearly 360° and one of the most spectacular views of the weekend. Views aside, the cocktails were good and while I can’t speak for the food, the friend group really enjoyed their appetizers here too.

Cuna de Tierra: The 40 minute drive to the winery felt fast when I had friends to chat up in the back seat. I arrived to the most serene vineyard with a couple farm dogs running around. It was perfect! The wine tasting was great and visiting the vineyard was a highlight of the weekend.

Hot Springs: I didn’t have time to make it here, but I added to the list since I would have loved to visit. Maybe next time!

Dine

I knew I would love the food in Mexico – I am Mexican after all! Chips and salsa galore, refried beans on every plate, warm baked bolillo bread, and fresh juices are just a few of the things I couldn’t get enough of. More on that below.

Don Taco Tequila: Hands down my favorite of all the meals I had in SMA! I was only in town three nights and four days but loved this restaurant so much I had to go back the next day. Don Taco Tequila is a vegan concept restaurant meaning no animal products in anything they serve. I had a few tacos and some of the best chips and salsa I have ever had… Which is saying a lot when there are almost too many Tex-Mex places in Dallas.

El Pegaso: A casual breakfast spot. It was low key, fast, and not over the top in any way. Service was friendly and my egg scramble hit the spot!

Quince: This brunch felt more Americanized to me. Maybe it was the decor? I was right and it turns out there is a Fort Worth location for Quince. My food was good enough but I wouldn’t return. I’m not one to complain about portion size at all, however something must be said about a tiny tiny sandwich. There are so many other places to dine at in SMA. Skip this place and try another.

The Restaurant: Google’s description of The Restaurant is “chic fusion.” After having dinner here, I still can’t tell you exactly what that means. Haha! I had some sort of spicy spaghetti and a raspberry champagne cocktail – both so good! It’s one of the nicer restaurants in the area if you’re looking for something upscale. The ambiance was lovely too! I highly recommend it.

Stay

Before I dive into my stay, let me fill you in on how to arrive to SMA. I flew into Guanajuato International Airport from DFW. It was a painless flight and I even felt like things were pretty speedy through customs. What was much slower and kind of miserable was getting to San Miguel de Allende. The taxi drive was an hour and forty minutes long through mountains. The logistics of arriving and returning were too much for me to want to return, but I am so glad I got to spend time in SMA.

I stayed at this Airbnb very close to the town’s plaza. Others in the friend group also stayed at Airbnb’s and we all had great experiences! I did get lucky staying in a place with an a/c unit. Most people in the area sleep with their windows open. If you’re hot natured, be sure to set a filter on Airbnb for availability with an a/c unit.

I hope you enjoyed the recap as much as I did writing it. Have you been to San Miguel de Allende before? Let me know in a comment 🙂
