I Got a Styling Wand!

My generous friends at Eva NYC sent me an entire set of styling tools in the “Floral Frenzy” pattern. They are so pretty, but more than anything, these tools are powerful!

My favorite of the bunch is hands down the Healthy Heat Pro-Power Dryer. My current dryer is heavy in comparison and has a retractable cord that barely even works. I needed an upgrade and this was it. This power dryer is lightweight and easy to maneuver with a round brush in my other hand.

Curling my hair is a normal part of my weekend routine. I usually wrap my hair around a curling iron because I didn’t have a wand. Now that I have one, I can’t go back to wrapping my hair with a curler! There was definitely a learning curve with the Healthy Heat Clip Free Curler. It has a one inch barrel that will give you tight kinky curls if you leave it in your hair for too long. I like the loose curls look, but still clean and put-together. To get this look, I adjusted the heat setting to 410 degrees (it’s adjustable from 170-450 degrees) and wrapped a 2 inch section of my hair for 4 to 5 seconds. My head of hair was done in no time and I love the finished look!

The Healthy Heat Ceramic Styling Iron is the only styling tool I haven’t tried yet. It is as beautifully packaged as the first two and too pretty to open! I’d like to learn how to curl my hair with a straightener and this might be the only time I actually do it. I will give you an update and let you know how it turns out!

All tools featured are available online and at select stores including Target. Thanks for reading my Eva NYC styling tool review!

Tote-ally Fall Ready

I’m sure you’ve heard. The PSL is back and fall is inevitably around the corner. Signs of fall: kids are back in school, craft stores have pumpkins, and we all start to regret the things we didn’t get to do over the summer, but don’t be sad! Fall marks a new season, which requires a new tote!

My tote of choice? The St. Anne from Barrington Gifts. It’s about the roomiest thing I’ve ever seen! The St. Anne has the lightest build without being flimsy. I’m most excited about the tote’s versatility. The bag will easily transition from work bag with a laptop and notebooks, to a day of errands with bottled water and my makeup bag. Speaking of versatility, I customized my tote to have the brown geometric pattern with a stone/light stone stripe. The neutral colors will allow me to wear my tote across the seasons! I’m thrilled about that!

Personalizing items is always nice, and the same can be done with Barrington Gifts’ St. Anne. It comes in over 35 patterns with over 35 stripe colors – the options are actually endless! With all the pretty patterns and colors to choose from, I gravitated towards Barrington Gifts’ new Fall Collection colors, which includes the brown geometric pattern and stone/light stone stripe as I mentioned before. It’s one of the prettiest combinations I could think of, and I can’t wait to fill it up over the fall season!

What do you tote around? Thanks for reading!

My 3 Most Worn Summer Items

All the summer feels! Can you believe there are only 26 more days until the “official” start of the fall season?! I’ll miss the sleeveless tops and cute sandals, the pool days, and the days of throwing on some shorts and heading out the door. It seems like everyone I know is excited for fall. While I’m not one of those people, I did a little fall prep during my last shopping trip and stocked up on some basics. More on that later.

For now, I’ll be living it up and basking in the sun as much as possible! That means wearing more of my 3 most worn items that have been on repeat this summer.

How to Get Smooth Skin

My skin is suffering from a peel after a bad sunburn 2 weeks ago. It’s the most frustrating thing to see my tan legs with parts of my pale skin peeking through! Don’t get me wrong, I had a wonderful time at South Padre with my family, but maybe I shouldn’t have fallen asleep with a leg out of the shade. Ha! After a painful week of rubbing aloe and avoiding clothes with seams, I’m ready for smooth skin again.

I’m not sure about your routine, but I’m lazy and I only shave my legs once a week. Usually on Thursday so I can have a hairless weekend and have “woo girl” arms as much as I’d like without being self conscious. Anyway, here are my favorite products for my smoothest skin!

Denim Dinner Date

My dinner date consisted of pizza and family – it was great! The best part was finally getting to wear dark wash denim even though it was 20 degrees too hot. I’m not much of a fall or winter person but there’s something about a fresh pair of dark blue jeans that make me giddy. The pair of Joe’s Jeans I’m wearing here were 54% off at Nordstrom Rack. You can’t beat that! Shop my denim and other Joe’s Jeans in the widget below.

(Charming) Workout Vibes

Knowing me, there is a 0% chance I would walk out of a workout with my hair and makeup still intact. BUT, let’s pretend I don’t sweat so I can fill you in on my latest loves.

I was home in south Texas a couple weekends ago and my sister took me to the most ginormous shoe store ever (ok fine, 2nd to DSW). It was unexpected, but we walked into Skechers. My mom and both sisters all own at least two pairs of Skechers. Why they never invited me into this shoe club? I have no clue! I tried on way too many shoes and was a immediately a fan of the brand. Let’s just say I was strolling down the aisles with a little more pep in my step.

Finally, this cute little pink pair came home with me. They’re so easy to slip into and almost a step of relief whenever I put them on. All of Skechers shoes are designed with comfort in mind so it’s no surprise that I’m already looking at these for my next purchase!

What is your go-to comfy shoe? Let me know in a comment below!

Polka Dot Dresses & Phone Cases

Back at it again with CaseApp because this blog post from January was a hit! When I find a high quality product I love I tend to stick with it for a while. My phone case obsession is no exception (oh hey, that rhymed!).

CaseApp offers custom case designs for iPads, PC laptops, Samsung phones, and basically any device you can think of that you thought CaseApp wouldn’t think of. My phone is with me all the time so I thought I’d get the most bang for my buck by selecting a couple of cases for my iPhone. In my last collaboration with CaseApp I designed a custom phone case for myself. It was beautiful and simple! You can check that out here. I wanted to create another custom case this time around, but I decided to go a different route and selected cases that were premade.

My final selections were this abstract blush case and this confetti dots case in a matte finish. The abstract blush one is perfect for finishing off the summer season but could still be worn in the fall since pink is basically a neutral 🙂 My colorful dots case is still bright and girly, but reminds me so much of the fall season with it’s pretty orange and mustard yellows. And just like that, my phone case situation is all taken care of for the rest of the season!

Get 20% off a custom designed case of your own with promo code ACHANCEOF20 on caseapp.com. Don’t forget to show me what you create!

Summer Statement Earrings

There is no such thing as too many ear dangles, right? I had the chance to select a few pieces from Coco Loves Rome and I’m so happy with my choices! Coco Loves Rome carries all the accessories you can think of from sunnies to handbags. The best part? They are all very affordable!

I’ve been drawn to statement earrings lately so that is what I chose for myself from Coco Loves Rome. I’m especially loving the Jill earrings from the photo above. The sweet little flower combined with a gold hoop is just the right amount of girly I’m looking for when choosing accessories!

The Robyn earrings (above) are just SO pretty! Can you tell I love gold? They pair well with all the white tops and white denim I have, which basically means I want to wear them all the time!

I stepped outside of my comfort zone and went with a multi-colored earring. The Brett earring (above) is bright and feels like a warm summer day that I never want to end. They are the lightest earrings and definitely a fun statement to add to your collection.

Check out CocoLovesRome.com to see the rest of their collection of earrings, and maybe even browse some necklaces while you’re there. Be sure to enter my giveaway on Instagram for a chance to win a $50 gift card to Coco Loves Rome’s online shop!

Orange Theory Fitness Review

After a cheesy walking-in-the-door picture like this, I have one thing to say… Hello and Welcome to my Orange Theory Review! Ha! Ok but really, let’s get started with this review (that is in no way sponsored).

I could have worn a cute workout look like I did in this blog post, but I was working out right after these pictures were taken and I decided I wanted this post to be more about the studio and my experience. I’m completely embarrassed to say that I look much worse than this on a normal day, but that’s besides the point. I hope you have a better understanding of what OTF is about after reading this!

What is Orange Theory Fitness?

OTF uses high intensity interval training to increase your heart rate during exercise on the treadmill, rower, and the floor using free weights. The class lasts 60 minutes where you’ll work on strength, endurance, or power as instructed by your OTF coach.

A Day at OTF

Classes are offered from 5:00 am to 8:18 pm at OTF Addison. I’ve attended most time slots, but my favorite classes and instructors are at 7:30 am, 8:45 am, and 10:00 am. My life clock is 2 minutes behind everyone, so I typically run into OTF and toss my keys on a hook and look for the first empty station (they have cubbies for people with bags too).

There are 24 people per class at maximum capacity, but mornings are slow and I can usually pick station number 4. This just means that I will be working on the same machines for the entire class period versus jumping around and fighting for the same treadmill or rower with another person. Sounds complicated, but it makes the class flow easier.

Upon arrival, the class roughly divides in half where people start on either the treadmill or rowing machine. For half an hour, the rowing group will alternate between the rower and free weights on the floor. The instructor will demonstrate the free weight movements before allowing the class to get started. In case I’d forget an exercise, I could always look up at one of the 4 screens in class showing me what I’m supposed to be doing.

Half an hour later it’s time to switch so that rowers go to the treadmills and vice versa. During this half hour the instructor asks you to increase and decrease your speed and incline according to Orange Theory’s paces: base, push, and all out. It is NOT a 30 minute run on the same speed! It is intense and will exhaust you (if you push yourself of course)! As a “runner” in class, 30 minutes will get me a 2.30-3.0 mile run depending on the workout. The following chart is taped on all treadmills:

Base Push All Out
Power Walker 3.5 – 4.5 mph                     1-3% incline 4% or greater 10% or greater
Jogger 4.5 – 5.5 mph                     1% incline ~1-2 mph over base ~2+ mph over base
Runner 5.5 mph or more               1% incline ~1-2 mph over base ~2+ mph over base
Instructors constantly talk about going through the 5 heart rate zones to know how hard you’re working. You’re encouraged to purchase a heart rate monitor from OTF to track your progress and see your heart rate on the large screens during class. I never purchased a heart rate monitor, so I can’t say very much about this, but I’m always half jealous that people can see how many calories they burned! I see people burning 400-700 calories per class according to their heart rate monitor data. I just push myself as hard as I can and hope I burned a lot of calories!

Why I’m Cancelling My Membership

It’s true. I’m cancelling my membership and it almost breaks my heart! My goal this year was to run 3 half marathons and I’ve only run one. Each time I start training for a half marathon, I neglect weight training. And by neglect, I mean I don’t lift not one dumbell. OTF does have half an hour of running, but I can’t justify the cost of membership for a workout that doesn’t fulfill my running needs.

This is where I pick up yoga. I’ve never done yoga before, but it’s good for runners’ flexibility and range of movement. Lately I’ve been enjoying my apartment gym workouts so I haven’t rushed into a yoga studio just yet. But I’m excited about learning something new and becoming a better runner!

Membership Costs

OK back to OTF! I was a member at OTF from summer 2016 to summer 2018 (though I did cancel my membership for a while when I moved to Kingsville for graduate school). I went through 2 membership types. After my free introduction class I was totally hooked and registered for 4 classes/ month at $59. The more I went to OTF, the more addicted I was which led to my next upgrade of 8 classes/ month at $99. I always wanted to upgrade to unlimited classes, but $159/ month is pretty steep! Still though, I know that OTF’s unlimited package is less than or similar in cost to what you would pay at other fitness classes. Yes, OTF is pricey but I like to flex my budget towards fitness rather than on nails or eating out.

OTF pros
  • I don’t think at all. No matter what mood I’m in, I just show up and have an amazing workout!
  • They’re totally cool with you rolling in late. I’m not saying that you should show up late, but I’m 2 minutes late every single class and I can’t help it. Some fitness classes will lock the door on you and not let you in. NOT cool!
  • Great music is played for you already. This means I can relax and enjoy the workout without fiddling with my Spotify music. I thought I’d miss my own jams, but I hardly notice because I’m working so hard.
  • OTF app for booking and cancelling classes is easy to manage. You can also see who will be teaching the class, the type of workout you’ll get (3G, 60 minute, 90 minute), and what number you are on a waitlisted class.
  • 1,000 locations!!! I have never been to an Orange Theory location that wasn’t OTF Addison (my main gym), but membership allows you to go to any OTF location to get your sweat on. Seems convenient for those who travel often.
  • They have competitions like Hell Week (as in the photo above), MayHem, and Marathon Month where workouts are extra intense. I finished Hell Week with 8 workouts in a row and I was in the best shape ever!
OTF cons
  • It’s expensive.
  • Classes aren’t 60 minutes. It’s closer to 52-55 minutes and this drives me insane. My membership is way too expensive to not be working my butt off for 60 minutes straight! The last few minutes of class are used to wipe down equipment and stretch.
I’ll note that most people see the following as cons, but they have never inconvenienced me.
  • Classes fill up for 7:00 pm a week ahead. I don’t workout at that time, but I can see how this would be a problem for people who get off work at 5 or 6. My best advice would be to book in advance so you don’t miss out!
  • You have to give an 8 hour notice if you cancel a class. Cancelling is easy on their app! Classes can also be cancelled within the 8 hour period and not be charged a late cancellation fee if you are picking up a different class time.
  • The timing of membership cancellation policy can be tricky. A 30 day notice needs to be given and then you are charged one month after that. I did this when I moved for graduate school and I had no issues. Cancelling a membership is only a problem if you’re trying to cancel immediately which most gyms won’t let you do either way.

Are you willing to try OTF now? Or are you already enrolled and loving it? Let me know in a comment below!

My Invisalign Experience

Before (Left), After (Right). Lighting is different in these photos, sorry!

Why I got Orthodontic Treatment

There’s a picture somewhere of 14 year old me carrying my niece for the first time. It was a photo I was supposed to cherish and keep forever, but instead it was the first time I noticed something wrong with my smile. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I knew I didn’t like it. Many, many photos later (and a trip to the dentist), I learned that I had a crossbite on my left side. For the next 10 years I insisted photos of me be taken on my right side, or what I called my “good side.”

How I Found the Best Orthodontist

Finding a good orthodontist in Dallas was easy, but I didn’t want to settle for good. Luckily for me, I live in a big city and my options were endless. I chose 3 orthodontists to consult with. Let me note that none of their offices were convenient locations for me. But I already knew if I wanted excellence, it probably wouldn’t be around the corner from home or work. That being said, I traveled to McKinney (1), Downtown Dallas (2), and Richardson (3) for these consultations. You can skip reading this part, but each is summed up:

1) This one was a woman. According to her, there were all sorts of things wrong with my teeth. Braces were my only option. Side note, I quickly learned I wasn’t just looking for orthodontic treatment, but I was looking someone I was compatible with. I really wanted to like this woman, but there were pictures of her volunteer work everywhere. Before she came in to see me, I had to watch a 5 minute video about how wonderful she was. I. Couldn’t. Stand. it. Price: $9,000

2 ) This man said I could have braces or Invisalign, but that I would 100% need a surgery to break the roof of my mouth (it has a name, I swear). It sounded so painful just listening to him! Then, I’d need a palatal expander on the roof of my mouth. Totally not down for this. Also didn’t like how he didn’t just tell me what I needed, he was going to let me decide if I wanted braces or Invisalign. Price: $ 5,000 + unknown cost of surgery

3 ) Finally, I saw Dr. Crosby. He told me about himself and his experience working with cases like mine. What I really liked was that he pulled up two before/afters of patients with crossbites that he had treated. Ultimately, I chose him because he seemed the most confident in his ability to straighten my teeth. He seemed excited to get started, and I’m so glad I picked him! However, I will say that he sees so many people that he may not remember you very well. It didn’t matter to me though, because he was so nice and always made a full-hearted effort to connect with me. Price: $5,500

Invisalign providers are assigned to a “level” based on their experience. From least to most experience, they are: Preferred Provider, Premier Provider, Elite Provider, and Top 1% Provider. To be a Top 1% Provider means to have treated at least 800 patients with at least 100 new patients every 6 months (Holy cow, that’s a lot!). Dr. Crosby is a Top 1% Provider and knowing how much experience he had put me at ease when I felt uneasy with my treatment. If you’re looking into Invisalign, I suggest doing a little more research in the differences between provider’s levels.

Invisalign Treatment

My teeth were scanned using the iTero Digital Scanner; a fancy piece of equipment that provided my Orthodontist with a 3D digital image of my teeth. Then, my digital images were sent off to the Invisalign company who actually make the trays. The trays came in 2 weeks later at Dr. Crosby’s office and I saw him again to pick them up. Initially I would meet with Dr. Crosby every 2 weeks. He would check my progress, give me a new set of trays, and send me off. By the end of treatment, I was seeing him less than every 6 weeks. It was easy!

Results

My initial set of Invisalign trays were a set of 24, but this number varies from person to person. I finished all 24 and I  could have stopped my treatment there but I didn’t. Dr. Crosby thought my smile looked great, “broader, more symmetrical” if I’m using his words. I wasn’t completely happy with my teeth yet, so my teeth were scanned again with the iTero scanner. The second set of trays I received, called “refinements,” was less than 24 trays and was easier to wear with me switching them out every 5 days instead of every 2 weeks the way I had at the start of treatment. Was the second set of trays worth the wait? Yes! I am so happy with my final results!

Invisalign Pros
  • I became a pro at flossing!!! TMI but I used to be lazy and only floss once or twice a week. I know, I used to be terrible! Now I floss on the daily and twice a day if I have time in the morning.
  •  I could eat anything I wanted! I’m not a big gum or popcorn chewer, but I know you’re not supposed to have those with braces. I like the general feeling of being able to see my teeth and clean them to the best of my ability without a wire across my teeth.
  • The Invisalign diet is a real thing!!! I’d floss and brush after dinner and pop my trays back in. Ice cream at 9pm? A piece of chocolate at 10:30 pm? No, not happening because I’m lazy and not about to brush all over again.
  • My retainer could also be used to whiten my teeth by adding a whitening treatment to my trays. When I was 18 I had trays made to whiten my teeth and used whitening gel in syringes every night. I was young and the service was sponsored so I can’t say how much it was exactly, but I believe it was $400. Now, I can ask my orthodontist for the teeth bleaching solution at anytime and not have to worry about the cost of creating well fitted trays.
Invisalign Cons
  • The first 3 days wearing trays are MISERABLE. I cried because my teeth were in so much pain. I didn’t think I would make it past the first few days but I did somehow.
  • The feeling of being sore every time I popped in a new set of trays really sucked. Dr. Crosby told me to put them in at night so I would feel the pain less. I did, but not too sure how much of a difference that made.
  • Having the trays in 22 hours a day isn’t fun. You forget how much snacking you do and snacking becomes less fun. I once went to the mall and grabbed a sample of something out of habit. I instinctively tossed the sample sized bite in my mouth with my trays on!!! It was a gross feeling and I never made that mistake again.
  • You’re supposed to brush and floss after every meal or after every snack, which is at least 3 times a day for the average person. I did this for the first 3 weeks and gave up. Carrying around paste and a brush was inconvenient and I honestly just didn’t feel like doing it sometimes. I just made sure to clean my trays and teeth very well at night and in the mornings.

Ok, that was a long one! Did I miss any pros or cons? Leave a comment and let me know about your experience with Invisalign or braces!

XO, Vivian
