Diet + Exercise COVID-19 Style

Hello there, August! I say that as the month is coming to an end, but it just comes and goes faster than I can say “coronavirus is the worst.” Ha! Speaking of the virus, remember when we were told not to wear masks? I nearly giggle at how much life has changed since March!

I have been fortunate enough to continue to leave home 5 days per week for work, but my evenings have had little structure. My routine pre-COVID was work, yoga, and… and nothing. Yoga was all I needed to be happy, so imagine my disappointment when my basic joy was taken from me.

Still though, I was motivated back in March watching many others on Instagram killing it with their at-home workouts. Yoga was out of the question for me, but I started running again and even got into Heather Robertson youtube workouts (she’s intense, check her out!). These two things were it for me, my only exercise, and I felt great!

The novelty of youtube workouts died down, Texas got too hot to run after work, and I was back in a major slump (I haven’t decided if I’m still in the slump or not!). I’m far from burning 500 calories per day and I have for the most part accepted that this is just a temporary season for me, and maybe for you too, if like me, you aren’t ready to be back in group classes or a gym setting.

That being said, power walks have been my go-to recently! Walking alone will not maintain the weight I feel most comfortable at, so my eating habits had to change a little bit. If you don’t already know, I’m going on two years as a vegetarian and I’m feeling great! I’ve been happy with my diet and there really wasn’t a whole lot for me to change, but there’s this one area that I could improve on… portion control! It didn’t happen overnight, but over the past few months as time spent exercising has diminished, so have my serving sizes. It’s not fun, but it makes the most sense and I’m feeling good these days even when I’m not getting a workout in.

Diet and exercise have been challenging this spring and summer. There’s always next year, right?! What has kept you motivated this summer? Let me know in a comment below!

XO,

Vivian
